Okay, so yesterday was officially one of the worst days ever! Rylan has been sick for the last few days and was therefore pampered quite a bit. However, yesterday he was definitely better, and decided to try my patience and exert his independence as much as possible. Granted his appetite has been poor due to illness, but yesterday the eating battles continued. Lunch was rough, with me trying my best to persuade, bribe and force him to eat. When that didn't work, it was time for nap. We read Dr. Suess for about half an hour before putting him down. I watched tv for about 20 minutes then decided to take a shower, when I got out, Rylan was already up and crying/whining. I tried getting him back to sleep but he whined and talked for another hour. Then we were off to the park despite my very irritated mood. So, for dinner I tried a new approach. I set his plate in front of him and basically just ignored him and ate mine. I told him if he ate his food he would get ice cream. When I finished my plate he said -- "Mommy get ice cream!" I agreed and ate a tiny scoop of ice cream in front of him. He of course pleaded and pleaded for some. But I was firm and unmoved that he needed to eat his food first. I admit he tried. Finally I said if he ate one bite of everything he would get ice cream. The potatoes went in fine. But then came the spinach. Rylan has a bad habit of making himself choke when he doesn't want to swallow something. So it began. I told him, no choking or spitting out the spinach or else no ice cream. Well, the choking continued, until the gag reflex was activated, and there came out ALL the food he had eaten thus far. That was it, I lost it and cried and cried - can I blame pregnancy hormones? And feeling like a failure as a mother? Rylan was immediately bathed and put to bed, no ice cream. Luckily he slept 12 hours last night, though I didn't fare so well. Anyway, sorry Suzanne, but two has reared it's ugly head! Somewhat glad to be at work today!
